What to Wear for Family Photos To Achieve That Light, Airy & Timeless Feel

Perfect Colors for Red Rock Photos in Southern Utah Including St George

One of the biggest questions I get from moms before a session is, “What should we wear?” And I completely understand. Planning outfits for the whole family can feel overwhelming. But the good news is, it doesn’t have to be complicated. If you want photos that feel soft, natural, and timeless, there’s a simple formula that works beautifully every time.

Start with mom. Yes — you go first. As moms, we’re usually the last ones we think about, but when it comes to family photos, your outfit sets the tone for everything else. When you feel confident and beautiful, it shows in every image. A flowy dress is always a beautiful choice. It photographs so well, especially at sunset, because it adds natural movement, softens the overall look, and creates that romantic, effortless feel. It is also a very flattering choice. Whether we’re in the desert, the mountains, an open field, or near the water, a flowy dress catches the breeze in the most magical way and instantly elevates your images.

When it comes to choosing colors, light neutrals are truly the secret to creating that soft, light and airy look — no matter where your session takes place. Shades like cream, ivory, soft beige, light gray, blush, sage, and pale blue reflect light instead of absorbing it, which helps brighten skin tones, soften shadows, and give your images a clean, timeless feel. Whether we’re photographing your family in the red rocks, in a green mountain meadow, on the beach, or in an urban setting, light neutrals blend effortlessly with the surroundings instead of competing with them. They also photograph beautifully in different lighting conditions, keeping tones consistent and natural. Dark or bold colors can cast color onto skin and pull attention away from faces, but soft neutrals keep the focus exactly where it belongs — on connection, genuine expressions, and those perfectly imperfect little moments. They complement every skin tone and coordinate easily with one another, making it simple for your family to look cohesive without feeling overly matched. Years from now, your photos won’t feel trendy or dated — they’ll feel classic, elegant, and timeless.

Instead of matching everyone in the exact same outfit, think coordinated. Choose three or four light tones that naturally blend together. For example, mom in soft cream, dad in light beige or gray, and the kids in light blue, blush, or sage. The goal is harmony, not identical outfits. When everyone complements each other, the entire image feels effortless and elevated.

At the end of the day, family photos aren’t really about the clothes. They’re about the way your child reaches for your hand, the way you laugh together, and the way dad pulls everyone close. When outfits are light, soft, and simple, nothing distracts from those moments — and those moments are what matter most.

Let’s create light, airy, timeless images your family will treasure forever. 💛.
